Pandemic-related resilience in HPV vaccination programmes – Perspectives from selected countries in Africa on what it will take to vaccinate 90% of girls by 2030

In this series of five country case studies, Kouassi and colleagues document how Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Liberia, Zambia, and Senegal maintained and recovered their HPV vaccination programmes following COVID-19 disruptions. Common challenges included school closures, misinformation conflating HPV and COVID-19 vaccines, and competing health priorities that diverted staff and funding. Enabling factors included strong Ministry of Health–Education collaboration, engagement with professional societies, and alternative delivery channels such as community outreach and facility-based vaccination. The authors call for flexible catch-up strategies, sustained investment in community communication, and a broader coalition of allies to meet the 90% coverage target by 2030.
