Identifying key challenges and optimizing approaches for training of health care professionals for HPV vaccination programmes

In this article, Waheed and colleagues identify key challenges in training health care professionals (HCPs) for HPV vaccination programmes in Ethiopia, Malawi, and Uganda, drawing on discussions from the CHIC Africa Symposium. Cascade training using a train-the-trainer model is the predominant approach, though all three countries report challenges including high staff turnover, incomplete reach to frontline workers, and insufficient content on interpersonal communication and disease aetiology. Recommendations include phased refresher training, integration of HPV content into pre-service curricula, inclusion of private-sector HCPs and teachers, and collaboration with local training institutions to build a sustainable, knowledgeable health workforce for cervical cancer elimination.
