Country Snapshot – Tanzania

In Tanzania, the HPV programme evolved through five distinct phases: a pilot in Kilimanjaro Region (2014–15); national introduction targeting 14-year-old girls (2018); HPV Plus integrating menstrual hygiene, nutrition, deworming, and sexual and reproductive health education (2019); a Multi-Age Cohort campaign targeting 5 million girls aged 9–14 (2024); and a switch to routine single-dose vaccination of 9-year-old girls from January 2025. Service delivery combines a school platform (primary channel), community outreach for out-of-school girls, and fixed health facilities. Demand generation engages community and religious leaders, media, and builds capacity for social listening and rumour response. The programme is co-financed by government, Gavi, WHO, UNICEF, and NGOs, with approximately 10% of the health sector budget ring-fenced for vaccine procurement, increased annually within the MTEF.
