Case studies on the progress of cervical cancer screening programs in Bhutan, India, and Türkiye

In this case series, Burdier and colleagues describe the contrasting progress of cervical cancer screening programmes in Bhutan, India, and Türkiye, drawing on presentations from the CHIC South Asia Symposium (New Delhi, 2022). India, despite national VIA-based guidelines since 2016, reports only 1.9% ever-screened coverage among women aged 30–49, constrained by infrastructure gaps and absent referral linkages. Bhutan has transitioned to national HPV DNA-based screening, achieving 77% cumulative coverage since 2020 with an 11.3% high-risk HPV positivity rate. Türkiye’s centralized, call-and-recall HPV DNA programme has reached 94% coverage among women ever screened, with highly efficient laboratory throughput. Lessons include linking screening to treatment, integrating into existing health platforms, implementing patient navigation systems, and securing clinically validated HPV tests at sustainable cost.
