Pakistan’s first cancer registry was established in the 1960s at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in Rawalpindi. From the 1970s to 1990s, the Pakistan Medical Research Council (PMRC) created the National Cancer Registry (NCR). A population-based registry in Karachi (1995–2007) led by Yasmin Bhurgri shared data with IARC and WHO. The Punjab Cancer Registry began in the public sector but later moved to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital. In 2015, the PMRC became the Pakistan Health Research Council (PHRC), custodian of the NCR. The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Pakistan (SOGP) is now developing data collection tools and protocols for cervical cancer prevention.
