WHO position paper on new recommendation and Global overview on HPV vaccine efficacy and safety

Paul Bloem (WHO/IVB) presented evidence on HPV vaccine efficacy, safety, and updated WHO recommendations. He underscored >90% protection against HPV 16/18 and herd effects at high coverage. Long-term studies show stable antibody levels over 10+ years for 1, 2, and 3 doses, with single-dose trials demonstrating ~97% efficacy against persistent infection. These findings informed WHO’s new guidance allowing one-dose schedules for girls 9–20 years, prioritizing multi-age catch-up and high-risk groups, including those with HIV. Global safety monitoring confirms an excellent profile, with only mild and transient reactions observed. Countries are now shifting strategies to expand coverage and accelerate cervical cancer elimination.
