HPV vaccination programs – regional overview

Dr. Anissa Sidibe presented progress and challenges in HPV vaccination across Africa, highlighting the region’s high cervical cancer burden, with 120,000 annual cases out of 690,000 globally. She reviewed the WHO 90-70-90 targets and emphasized vaccination as a cornerstone for elimination, capable of preventing over 45 million deaths in the next century. Sidibe discussed evidence supporting single-dose schedules, now recommended by 15 African countries, and showcased lessons from early implementers achieving high coverage. Barriers include misinformation, limited funding, and service delivery gaps, particularly in West and Central Africa. Opportunities were noted in adapting strategies, expanding vaccination to boys, and leveraging school-based platforms to strengthen adolescent immunization programs.
