Dr. Emmanuel Njambe’s presentation provided a global overview of HPV vaccine introduction, framed within the WHO 2030 targets for cervical cancer elimination (90–70–90). He highlighted that while two-thirds of countries have introduced the vaccine, they account for only one-third of the target adolescent girls, with large populations in countries like India and China still unvaccinated. Coverage trends showed declines during 2019–2021, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, due to global supply shortages and COVID-19 disruptions such as school closures and vaccination program delays. In the South-East Asia region, five countries (Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand) have nationwide introductions, with others introducing subnationally or planning scale-up. Post-introduction evaluations identified strong intersectoral coordination, school-based delivery strategies, and effective community engagement as key strengths, but also persistent challenges including cold-chain capacity, vaccine wastage management, and sustaining annual communication with schools and parents. Urgent action is required to improve coverage and catch up missed cohorts, especially in high-population settings.
