Dr. Bellejoie Louise Iriwacu from Burundi’s Expanded Program on Immunization shared the country’s journey toward HPV vaccine introduction with Gavi support. A pilot phase launched in 2016 covered two districts (Ngozi and Rumonge), targeting schoolgirls in third grade and out-of-school girls aged 10 with a two-dose Cervarix schedule. High coverage rates above 85% demonstrated strong community acceptance, supported by intensive social mobilization. Following pilot evaluations, Burundi prepared a nationwide scale-up using a school-based strategy complemented by health facilities for out-of-school girls. Lessons included the importance of accurate target enumeration, cross-sector collaboration, and prioritizing school platforms to minimize dropout. Cost analyses underscored the need for efficient resource allocation, particularly for communication and outreach.
