Discussion on delivery strategies: Are school based programs sustainable? How HPV vaccine delivery platforms can be made sustainable?

The closing panel explored how to sustain and adapt HPV vaccination programs, especially in the aftermath of COVID-19. Countries shared challenges in reaching out-of-school girls, mobile populations, and those changing schools—prompting shifts like Zambia’s decision to target 9-year-olds for greater stability. Consent requirements in private schools were seen as a barrier, highlighting the need for better early communication with parents and schools. Speakers emphasized integrating HPV vaccination with other adolescent health services, such as HIV prevention, and tailoring strategies to local contexts. Liberia and The Gambia shared how school-based programs can be supplemented with outreach and facility-based delivery. Vaccine wastage was minimized by keeping unused doses at local health centers with adequate cold storage. The panel concluded with a call for flexible, data-driven approaches and highlighted opportunities to integrate HPV with COVID-19 vaccination platforms.
