In Zimbabwe, a demonstration project ran from 2014–2017 in two districts before the HPV vaccine was introduced nationwide in 2018, initially through school-based campaigns targeting all girls aged 9–14. The programme currently targets Grade 5 girls in school and 10-year-old out-of-school girls, using both Cervarix and Gardasil vaccines. In June 2025, Zimbabwe shifted from a two-dose to a single-dose schedule following the 2022 WHO SAGE recommendation and ZimNITAG guidance, on grounds of cost and effectiveness. A situational analysis was conducted in 2024 and an updated HPV vaccination strategy developed. Coverage peaked at 107% in 2019 but dropped to 55% in 2023, with significant provincial variation; the target is 90% coverage among eligible girls by 2025. Service delivery relies primarily on school-based outreach, complemented by health facilities and integrated district outreach, with Village Health Workers mapping and following up out-of-school girls.
