In South Africa, the HPV vaccine was introduced nationally on 11 March 2014, initially using a two-dose bivalent schedule targeting Grade 4 girls (9–14 years) in public and special schools. In 2024, following National Advisory Group on Immunization recommendations, the programme switched to a single dose targeting Grades 5–7 girls across public, special, private, and independent schools. National coverage reached 88% (430,319 of 489,615 girls) in FY2024/25. Service delivery is primarily school-based and integrated into the Integrated School Health Programme alongside other adolescent vaccines, health screening, and deworming. A Mother-Daughter campaign promotes HPV DNA screening for early detection in mothers while improving vaccine uptake in girls. The programme is fully domestically funded through a dedicated National Treasury Conditional Grant, ensuring sustainability without Gavi support, and is aligned to the WHO 90–70–90 cervical cancer elimination targets by 2030.
