Country Snapshot – Malawi

Malawi: Nationally introduced in 2019 using Gardasil (quadrivalent, two doses) targeting 9-year-olds with catch-up for ages 9–14. Coverage varies significantly across districts, with challenges including stockouts, cultural and religious barriers, and natural disasters. Service delivery combines static, outreach, and mobile strategies for out-of-school girls and school-based vaccination for enrolled girls, with HIV/ART clinics serving HIV-infected children. MAITAG approved the single-dose switch since 2017, officially implemented in October 2025 and informally since 2023. Programme highlights include a hybrid school and out-of-school approach, community mobilization through HSAs, and strong Ministry of Education collaboration. A Multi-Age Cohort campaign was conducted in October 2025, with future priorities focused on strengthening school-based delivery and promoting 2nd and 3rd dose uptake for HIV-infected girls.
