CHIC Francophone Africa Symposium Highlights

The third CHIC symposium, held for the first time in a francophone country in Abidjan, gathered representatives from 17 African nations to address HPV vaccination challenges. Discussions underscored the urgency of achieving 90% vaccination coverage to prevent cervical cancer, which causes over 1,400 deaths annually in Côte d’Ivoire. Cameroon’s experience highlighted the pivotal role of community engagement, involving religious leaders and local actors to counter misinformation and boost uptake. Speakers emphasized school-based strategies, leveraging teachers’ influence on children, and showcased impactful visual tools to raise awareness about cervical cancer. Participants recognized common barriers across francophone and anglophone regions, reaffirming the need for sustained advocacy and clear communication. By the symposium’s end, attendees expressed newfound clarity and actionable strategies to strengthen national vaccination programs.
