Bhutan’s cervical cancer screening program began with nationwide Pap smear testing in 2006, followed by an HPV vaccination program in 2010 achieving 97% coverage among adolescent girls. Despite this, cervical cancer remains the most common cancer among Bhutanese women, with significant mortality in older age groups. To enhance detection, HPV-DNA testing was introduced in 2020, using three regional cytology centers supported by national guidelines, algorithms, and online data reporting (DHIS2). Screening targets women aged 30–65 through population-based camps, with results and follow-ups coordinated digitally. By 2022, 77% of eligible women were screened, identifying 11.3% HPV positivity and 72 cervical cancer cases. Challenges include limited human resources, competing health priorities, and mobilizing women, but phased camp implementation, strong local government engagement, and targeted advocacy have proven effective strategies toward elimination goals.
