Dr. Biey Nsiari Muzeyi Joseph, WHO focal point for vaccination in West Africa, presented an overview of HPV-related cervical cancer incidence, mortality, and socio-economic impact in Africa. He recalled the 2018 WHO call to action and the 2020 global strategy targeting 90-70-90 goals for vaccination, screening, and treatment by 2030. The presentation highlighted Africa’s disproportionate burden, with 19 of the 20 most affected countries located in the region. High-risk HPV types 16 and 18 were underscored as primary drivers of disease, with considerable variation by continent. Social and economic consequences were detailed, including stigma, loss of income, and barriers to care. Dr. Biey emphasized that scaling vaccination and screening can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality, urging urgent national and regional action.
