In Senegal, HPV vaccination was introduced in 2018 and integrated from the outset into routine immunization, delivered through health facilities, schools, and community outreach. Despite achieving 90% first-dose coverage in 2019, coverage declined following COVID-19-related disruptions and has since stabilized at around 70%, prompting a national revitalization plan launched in 2023. The country has developed innovative community delivery strategies — including peer-girl networks (“Ronde des jeunes filles”), neighborhood-focused vaccination days, and the HPV+ pilot integrating menstrual hygiene kits — to reach both in-school and out-of-school girls. Persistent challenges include weakened collaboration with the education sector, inconsistent inclusion of HPV vaccines in routine outreach sessions, misinformation, and the two-dose schedule’s impact on second-dose retention. Senegal is maintaining the two-dose schedule while pursuing pre-COVID coverage levels, pending a formal NITAG review on transitioning to a single dose.
