Senegal was the first West African country supported by GAVI to introduce the HPV vaccine into its routine immunization program, targeting around 200,000 nine-year-old girls annually. Despite challenges such as rumors about vaccine safety, misinformation, health worker strikes, and confusion with COVID-19 vaccination, strong political engagement and community partnerships enabled effective crisis communication and mobilization. Pilot phases, national campaigns, and involvement of schools and local influencers helped maintain awareness and trust. Lessons learned emphasize integrating scientific voices, leveraging events like “Pink October,” and strengthening coordination across health and education sectors to sustain coverage.
